A recent verdict in Austria has sparked widespread outrage after a 52-year-old Syrian national was sentenced to only 4.5 years in prison for sexually abusing a six-year-old girl. The perpetrator reportedly lured the victim into his apartment with candy.
The horrific incident occurred last July in Vienna. According to court proceedings, the man observed the child playing in the courtyard of his building before enticing her into his residence with a lollipop. Once inside, the girl was held against her will and sexually assaulted. ‘He lured the girl with a lollipop and then pushed her into his apartment,’ prosecutors stated.
In a further disturbing discovery, police found approximately 6,000 files on the man’s computer depicting the abuse of children and infants. DNA evidence was also recovered from the victim’s intimate area. The Syrian man confessed to all charges, reportedly stating: ‘I am a paedophile’ during the trial.

Despite the gravity of the offences, the Vienna Regional Court handed down a sentence of just four and a half years. The leniency of the punishment has been attributed to a specific loophole in the Austrian Criminal Code, which fails to mandate harsher penalties in such cases, regardless of the victim’s extreme youth or the severity of the assault.
The right-wing, anti-immigration Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) has condemned the sentence, noting that the perpetrator was receiving welfare benefits at the time the rape occurred. FPÖ Secretary-General Michael Schnedlitz described the incident as a ‘terrible result of a completely irresponsible immigration policy’ and argued it was a direct consequence of the ‘welcoming culture the establishment parties have brought about in our homeland.’
‘This man has forfeited his right to our hospitality in the most brutal way imaginable. Instead of discussing whether he will receive therapy in this country, the only logical consequence must be immediate deportation to his homeland of Syria,’ Schnedlitz stressed.
FPÖ, which is leading every credible nationwide poll by a wide margin, with support measured at approximately 37–38 per cent. In contrast, the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) and the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) both stand at roughly 18–20 per cent.
