As ‘constructive opposition’, the Christian Democratic People’s Party (KDNP) is supporting the cost-cutting measures put forward by the governing Tisza Party for the operation of the National Assembly of Hungary, KDNP parliamentary leader Bence Rétvári has announced on his Facebook page.
The new measures introduced by Tisza call for a 40 per cent reduction in the salaries of MPs. However, the allowances for committee chairs and vice chairs, as well as for political group leaders and their deputies, are actually being increased. Thus, the overall reduction in payroll spending will be around 10–15 per cent.
‘According to the Tisza Party’s calculations, their proposal would generate savings of approximately 40 per cent, amounting to 50 billion HUF [~$162 million] over a single parliamentary term. Following 2010, Fidesz–KDNP decided to halve the size of Parliament, meaning that, since 2014, there have been nearly half as many Members of Parliament serving as before.
We also reduced the number of local council members by almost half. While the scale of these reductions was similar, the Tisza Party’s proposal focuses on reducing costs per member of Parliament, whereas Fidesz–KDNP cut the overall number of both parliamentary representatives and local council members,’ Rétvári wrote in his post, expressing his party’s support for the proposed measures.
The proposal was passed by the National Assembly with 189 out of 199 votes in favour on Monday, 8 June.
The KDNP was the coalition party for Former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary’s Fidesz Party during his 16-year reign from 2010 to 2026.
