A Montreal police officer, an armed suspect, and a civilian were killed on Monday, 22 June, during a dramatic shootout in the Côte-des-Neiges district of Montreal, while a second officer was seriously wounded in what police described as one of the worst incidents the city has faced in recent years. Authorities have not yet announced a motive, and it remains unclear whether the attack will be investigated as terrorism.
The shooting began shortly before noon near the Westbury complex in the densely populated Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough. Montreal police issued an emergency alert warning residents that an armed and dangerous suspect was at large and ordering people to shelter indoors as heavily armed officers flooded the area.

According to Montreal police, the suspect was eventually shot and killed by responding officers. Police later confirmed that one officer had died, another officer was hospitalized in serious condition but later stabilized, and a civilian was also killed. No additional suspects are currently being sought.
Numerous videos circulating online appear to show parts of the confrontation. One widely shared clip shows a man dressed in military-style camouflage carrying what appears to be a rifle as he moves through a parking lot before exchanging gunfire with two police officers. Multiple shots can be heard, and one officer appears to collapse during the firefight. Other footage reportedly shows armed police securing the scene and treating casualties in the aftermath.
Another video circulating on social media has fuelled speculation about the death of the civilian victim. Some online accounts, including posts shared by Breaking911, have alleged that the civilian may have been struck by police gunfire during the exchange with the suspect. However, authorities have not confirmed those claims, and the circumstances of the civilian’s death remain unclear. Israeli and Jewish community media outlets identified the victim as Michael Mizrahi, a member of Montreal’s Jewish community, but officials have not publicly stated whether he was killed by the suspect or by police fire during the shootout.

The incident occurred in an area that includes a significant Jewish population and several Jewish institutions. Despite online speculation, police have not indicated that the neighbourhood itself was the target, and no ideological, political, or religious motive has been established. Investigators have also not released the identity of the gunman.
Montreal police chief Fady Dagher described the events as ‘one of the worst nightmares’ for the force as investigators continue to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine exactly how all three fatalities occurred.
