Alexandra Szentkirályi, head of Fidesz in Budapest, has criticized the opposition Tisza Party over a leaked energy transition plan that would significantly raise costs for Hungarian households.
Speaking on the Hour of Justice programme, Szentkirályi claimed the proposals could cost an average family up to two million forints per year. According to her, the plan includes phasing out Russian energy imports and ending government subsidies on household utilities, steps she said would effectively dismantle the country’s utility price caps.
She warned that removing these measures could lead to energy bills rising to levels seen in countries such as Poland and the Czech Republic, potentially tripling current costs. She also argued that eliminating regulated fuel prices would immediately increase petrol costs by around 150 forints per litre, with even higher prices possible if Hungary fully abandons Russian oil imports.
Szentkirályi further accused the Tisza Party of proposing a new energy independence tax, which she said would impose a 1.5 per cent levy on personal savings, rather than targeting multinational companies or banks.
The politician also criticized misleading public opinion polling and expressed confidence in the governing party’s electoral prospects, stating that there is no widespread demand for a change in government.
Turning to broader geopolitical issues, she argued that recent developments, such as disruptions to oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline highlight weaknesses within the European Union. She also criticized Brussels for failing to act decisively in protecting the interests of member states like Hungary and Slovakia during the current energy crisis.
Szentkirályi reiterated the government’s opposition to Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, arguing that a change in Hungary’s leadership could accelerate the process. She maintained that under a Fidesz government, Hungary would continue to prioritize national sovereignty, oppose military involvement in external conflicts, and resist policies that could increase financial burdens on citizens.
She concluded by expressing hope that political unity could be restored after the elections, while also warning that tensions could escalate if the opposition were to challenge the outcome.
