US Vice President JD Vance is reportedly scheduled to visit Hungary just days ahead of its high-stakes parliamentary election, on 7–8 April. The information was reported by POLITICO, which claims it obtained a State Department cable with the subject line: ‘Hungary: Scenesetter for Vice President Vance’s April 7–8 Visit to Budapest’.

The cable further states that the ‘close relationship between President Trump and PM Orbán has transformed the prior administration’s confrontational bilateral relationship into what both countries hail as a new “golden era”—a respectful, results-driven partnership focused on deepening defence, commercial, and energy ties.’

It also adds that the two countries must work together to counter threats to Western civilization, such as mass migration. In a passage that appears to address Vance directly, the cable stresses that ‘your visit sends a clear signal of US commitment’, underscoring the shared values of the two allies and ensuring that Hungary remains not a ‘crossroads of great-power competition’, but a ‘democratic linchpin’ firmly aligned with the United States, working towards the ‘renewal of our civilizational alliance across Europe’.

Vance would be the highest-level US visitor to Hungary since then President George W Bush’s trip in June 2006. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently travelled to Budapest to meet Viktor Orbán in February, endorsing the Hungarian prime minister and stating that his leadership is ‘essential’ for American interests in Central Europe.

On the same day as the POLITICO report, President Donald Trump once again endorsed Orbán, calling on Hungarians to ‘get out and vote’ for him, describing the prime minister as his ‘true friend’, a ‘fighter’, and ‘a winner’. Orbán visited Washington, DC in November 2025, securing an exemption from American sanctions on Russian oil imports and what he described as an ‘American financial shield’ to counter potential external speculative or political pressure on Hungary’s economy.

Vance’s visit comes in the final phase of an election campaign which, in recent weeks, has begun to resemble a full-scale intelligence and information war. The opposition and Western media accuse Orbán of cooperating with Russia to influence the outcome of the vote, while the government alleges that the opposition Tisza party is part of a coordinated foreign intelligence effort to remove the prime minister, who has won four consecutive elections with a supermajority and has been in power for 16 years.

Vance represents a strand of Republican intellectual thought that views Hungary as an alternative to the liberal governance model, praising the country and Orbán for their positions on mass migration, sovereignty, and family policy, as well as their opposition to the ruling EU elites. Vance himself has repeatedly made positive statements about Hungary and criticized the European Union for withholding funds it argues are due to the country.
