Hungary’s public broadcaster has withdrawn the appointments of Gábor Hajdú as editor-in-chief and Miklós Borsa as presenter of the revamped M1 News programme, Duna Media Service announced on Tuesday.
The decision came one day after the broadcaster unveiled plans to relaunch M1 News in the second half of August with a new editorial leadership and presenting team.
On Monday, Duna Media Service said Hajdú would take over as editor-in-chief, while Borsa would return to the screen after more than a decade. The broadcaster also announced that the renewed news programme would combine experienced journalists with emerging talent.
The appointments were subsequently withdrawn, although the public broadcaster did not provide a reason for the decision in its statement.
The news portal 24.hu reported that Hajdú had previously worked in communications for the Mészáros Group, while Borsa had worked as a journalist for M1 News before stepping away from the role in 2014.
After Telex cited the 24.hu report detailing the professional backgrounds of the two appointees, Prime Minister Péter Magyar commented on the outlet’s Facebook post, writing only: ‘I don’t think so…’
No further details have been announced regarding the editorial leadership or presenting team for the relaunched M1 News programme.
