A Christian preacher was left bloodied after being punched by a Black man during an assault at Speakers’ Corner in London’s Hyde Park on Sunday, 21 June, in the latest violent incident involving Christian evangelists at the historic free-speech venue.
Video footage circulating online showed emergency services and Metropolitan Police officers responding to the scene after a preacher identified as Timothy was struck during a confrontation. Images from the aftermath showed the preacher with visible injuries and blood on his face, while police officers restrained a suspect on the ground behind a cordon as a large crowd gathered nearby.
According to eyewitness accounts and videos shared online, Timothy and a cameraman from the Christian apologetics YouTube channel Revelation 22:13 were attacked during the incident. Footage from the scene appears to show a Black male suspect being detained by police shortly afterwards.
The incident took place during the regular weekend gatherings at Speakers’ Corner, the famous section of Hyde Park that has served as one of Britain’s best-known forums for public debate, religious discussion, and free expression since the 19th century. Every weekend, Christian preachers, Muslim speakers, atheists, political activists, and members of the public gather there to engage in often heated exchanges on religion and current affairs.
Timothy is a regular Christian street preacher and apologist who frequently participates in public debates at Speakers’ Corner, particularly on Christianity and Islam. His appearances are regularly featured on YouTube channels dedicated to documenting the debates and discussions that take place at the site.
At the time of writing, the Metropolitan Police had not released detailed information regarding the suspect’s identity, motive, immigration background, or possible charges.
The assault is the latest in a series of violent incidents involving Christian preachers at Speakers’ Corner in recent years.
In July 2021, Christian preacher Hatun Tash, a former Muslim known for publicly criticizing Islam, was stabbed while speaking at Speakers’ Corner. She suffered injuries to her face and hands, but the attacker was never identified or brought to justice despite a counter-terrorism investigation.
Tash had previously been assaulted on multiple occasions and became the target of repeated threats because of her criticism of Islam. On several occasions, police were forced to intervene following confrontations involving hostile crowds.
In 2023, Islamist extremist Edward Little was sentenced to life imprisonment after plotting to murder Tash in a planned gun attack at Speakers’ Corner. Prosecutors said he had sought to acquire a firearm and identified the Christian preacher as his primary target.
More recently, in May 2025, Christian preacher Daniel Ayettey was threatened with a knife by Ahmed Mohammed, a Sudanese migrant, during a confrontation at the same location. Mohammed was subsequently arrested and convicted.
