The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has indicted the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a left-wing civil rights organization, on multiple federal fraud charges, alleging that it secretly channelled more than $3 million to members of white supremacist and extremist groups over nearly a decade.
According to prosecutors, the indictment covers the period between 2014 and 2023, during which the SPLC allegedly channelled funds—often through shell entities—to individuals affiliated with organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazi networks. The DOJ claims these payments were concealed from donors and, in some cases, may have contributed to the activities of the very extremist groups the organization publicly claimed to combat.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the case represents a ‘systematic deception’, alleging that donors were led to believe their contributions supported anti-extremism efforts, while funds were instead redirected to individuals within those networks.
The SPLC has strongly denied wrongdoing. Its leadership argues that the payments were part of a long-standing intelligence-gathering strategy using informants to infiltrate extremist groups—an approach it claims helped prevent violence and was, at times, coordinated with law enforcement. The organization has described the indictment as politically motivated and part of a broader campaign against left-wing institutions.
The SPLC has built its reputation over decades as one of the most influential organizations monitoring and litigating against hate groups in the US. The allegation that such an organization may have financed individuals within white supremacist networks—even under the justification of infiltration—raises serious questions about transparency and its stated goals.

FBI Director Kash Patel, a vocal critic of the SPLC, described the organization as a ‘partisan smear machine’, accusing it of labelling mainstream conservative and religious groups as extremists and thereby distorting public discourse on domestic threats. The FBI ended its partnership with the SPLC in October 2025.
Republican lawmakers have repeatedly argued that the SPLC collaborated with previous Democratic administrations to target conservatives and limit free speech. Congressional hearings in late 2025 had already centred on allegations that the organization worked to ‘deprive’ conservative groups of their constitutional rights. Elon Musk has previously described the SPLC as a ‘hate propaganda’ machine and a ‘total scam’.
