A gunman opened fire at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, DC where US President Donald Trump was set to speak at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday, 25 April. The event was attended by many members of the administration, celebrities, and members of the press.

The ceremony was on break, and President Trump was speaking to his wife, Melania Trump and an aide when gunshots were heard, and law enforcement rushed in.

Thankfully, no one was injured in the shooting. One officer was hit, but the bullet was stopped by his bulletproof vest. President Trump was rushed to safety by Secret Service agents.

The suspect has already been identified and is in custody. He is a 31-year-old school teacher named Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California, who was a guest at one of the hotel rooms.

According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) records, he donated $25 to the liberal action group ActBlue in the lead-up to the 2024 US presidential election. His target also suggests that his attack was politically motivated.

Third Assassination Attempt against President Trump

The first attempt on President Trump’s life came the closest.

He was speaking at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on 13 July 2024, when 20-year-old Thomas Crooks took shots at him with a rifle from the rooftop of a nearby building. Crooks hit and killed one man in attendance, 50-year-old Corey Comperatore. One of his bullets grazed President Trump’s ear, causing it to bleed. Secret Service returned fire and killed Crooks on the scene.

On 15 September 2024, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh set up a sniper’s nest at the course President Trump was golfing at at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida.

As he was aiming at the President, Routh’s rifle was spotted by an agent before he could fire it. Agents took shots at the assassin again. However, this time, they failed to hit the target, who was able to flee the scene. He was captured by law enforcement after a traffic stop in nearby Martin County.

Routh was convicted in federal court of Attempted Assassination of a Major Presidential Candidate, along with four other lesser charges, in September 2025. He is now serving a life sentence without a possibility of parole.
