Incoming Apple Chief Executive John Ternus said he intends to build on the company’s growing momentum in the entertainment business when he succeeds Tim Cook as CEO in September.
Speaking to Reuters on the red carpet at the premiere of the fourth season of Ted Lasso, Ternus praised the progress of Apple’s streaming business and said the company would continue investing in high-quality content.
‘I think we have such tremendous momentum right now in Apple TV,’ Ternus said. ‘There are so many amazing shows, so many amazing characters and stories, and we’re just going to keep building on that momentum.’
Apple entered the original streaming market in 2019 with Apple TV+, which was rebranded as Apple TV last year. Since then, the service has earned critical acclaim with productions including the Academy Award-winning CODA, the box office hit F1, and Emmy-winning series such as Ted Lasso and The Studio.
Standing alongside Ternus, Cook said he has been sharing his experience in the entertainment business as part of the leadership transition.
‘Our role is to be the best,’ Cook said. ‘We’re not about the most. There are other companies that do that. We’re about the best, and I feel like we’ve really hit our stride.’
Cook also said Apple remains open to future partnerships in entertainment where it can contribute distinctive technological capabilities.
He pointed to the company’s collaboration with Formula 1 as an example. For the Brad Pitt film F1, Apple developed custom cameras designed to give viewers the sensation of being inside a Formula 1 car. Formula 1 races are also streamed exclusively on Apple TV in the United States, while Apple provides live standings, updates and additional coverage across Apple News and other services.
‘We’ll do things where we can bring something unique, where we can innovate in ways others might not be able to,’ Cook said. ‘We’re excited about what we’re doing with Formula 1 and the audience response we’ve seen. More projects like that are certainly possible.’
