Utah Judge Tony Graf has denied the defence counsel’s request to forbid the presence of cameras during the trial of Tyler Robinson, the 23-year-old man accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The ruling was handed down on Friday, 8 May.
Since January, Robinson’s attorneys have argued that the media coverage of the killing has been prejudicial to their client, thus violating his right to due process; and that cameras in the courtroom would only exacerbate that problem. Judge Graf, however, did not agree with that argument.
‘Livestreaming in particular allows as many people as are interested to observe the justice system at work,’ the Judge said during the remote hearing during which he delivered his ruling on the motion by the defence.
The victim’s widow Erika Kirk has stated that she welcomes the decision about media coverage of the trial.
Another motion by Robinson’s team, however, was granted. They requested more time before the next preliminary hearing to further examine the DNA evidence included in the discovery. The next hearing was originally scheduled for 18 May, but has now been postponed to a date yet to be determined. The prosecution has objected to the delay, and wanted to keep to the original schedule.
Charlie Kirk was shot in the neck during his appearance at the Utah Valley University campus in Orem, Utah on 10 September 2025 and passed away later that day at just age 31. Tyler Robinson is the prime and only suspected assassin, who was just charged with the aggravated murder of Kirk within a week of the killing.
Judge Graf has previously ruled that the prosecution is allowed to seek the death penalty in the case.
