Hungarian triathlon talent Fanni Szalai has joined the Red Bull Athlete programme after receiving a surprise announcement during a visit to the Hungaroring ahead of this weekend’s Formula One Hungarian Grand Prix.
The 18-year-old arrived at the circuit expecting a behind-the-scenes tour of the Red Bull Racing team, but the visit ended with Formula One driver Isack Hadjar presenting her with a Red Bull cap, symbolizing her entry into the company’s elite group of sponsored athletes.
Szalai said the announcement came completely unexpectedly and described it as the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.
‘I never imagined my dream would come true there,’ she said. ‘I even cried. I still get goosebumps when I think about it.’
She added that receiving the news directly from Hadjar made the experience even more memorable.
‘Meeting him was already incredible, but getting the cap from him was unbelievable. At first I thought it was just a souvenir, maybe something he had signed. Even when he welcomed me to the Red Bull team, it took a while to realize what had happened. I’m incredibly happy,’ she said.
Szalai joins a distinguished group of Hungarian Red Bull athletes that includes Olympic canoe champion Sándor Tótka, CrossFit athlete Laura Horváth, cyclist Blanka Vas and footballer Dominik Szoboszlai.
The recognition follows a rapid rise through the ranks of international triathlon.
Diagnosed with asthma as a child, Szalai began swimming on medical advice before discovering triathlon after her family moved home. She entered her first competition at the age of ten and quickly established herself as one of Hungary’s leading youth athletes, winning national aquathlon and triathlon titles.
By the age of 15, she was already competing alongside elite senior athletes in the Supertri series while also racing internationally in Austria.
In 2024, she joined a German club to compete in the Bundesliga, becoming both its youngest medalist and later its youngest race winner. The following season she claimed the overall Bundesliga title.
Her breakthrough year also included a bronze medal in the elite mixed relay at the European Championships, as well as bronze medals at both the junior World Championships and European Championships.
This season, Szalai made an immediate impact at the senior level. On her World Cup debut, she finished ninth before winning the World Cup event in Tiszaújváros as the youngest finalist. She also claimed victory at the European Cup in Monte Gordo, Portugal.
In July, she debuted in the World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) in Hamburg with another ninth-place finish before helping Hungary secure its best-ever result in the mixed relay World Championships by winning the silver medal.
Her selection as a Red Bull Athlete marks another milestone in what has already become one of the most promising careers in Hungarian endurance sport.
