American right-wing political commentator and activist Laura Loomer has completed a rapid transformation from promoting Russian narratives to becoming a fully aligned pro-Ukraine influencer. In an interview with the Kyiv Independent, Loomer said she would kill Russian President Vladimir Putin if she were president and Moscow supplied Iran with weapons used against American troops.
‘If I were president of the United States and Russia was supplying Iran with weapons to kill US soldiers, I would kill Vladimir Putin,’ Loomer, a prominent ally of Donald Trump, told the Ukrainian outlet, sparking heavy reactions from both sides and renewing scrutiny of her dramatic U-turn.
The clip spread like wildfire on X, reposted by many commentators with significant reach, including Mario Nawfal, who sarcastically thanked her for the ‘diplomacy lesson’.
Several users also described Loomer’s rhetoric as reckless or ‘unhinged’. Margarita Simonyan, head of the Russian state-funded RT network, responded sarcastically that it was fortunate that leading ‘Russophobes’ were so ‘sane and reasonable’. Other reactions focused on how far Loomer had shifted from her previous support for Kremlin narratives.
Loomer had spent years opposing US military assistance to Ukraine, minimizing Russia’s invasion and repeating claims that Ukraine was controlled by Nazis. She also wrote for RT and relied heavily on Russian-linked material circulating on Telegram after being banned from several major social-media platforms.
Her position began changing gradually before becoming public in June, when she admitted that she believed she had ‘fallen for Russian propaganda’. The shift accelerated during a July visit to Ukraine, where she experienced air-raid alerts, travelled close to the eastern front, visited sites damaged by Russian attacks and interviewed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 23 July.
Loomer told Zelenskyy that she had been ‘bamboozled’ into believing false claims about Ukraine. She has since backed stronger sanctions against Russia, supported Patriot air-defence assistance for Kyiv and described Moscow as an enemy because of its military relationship with Iran.
The U-turn was welcomed by Ukrainian officials and praised by Trump, who reposted part of Loomer’s Zelenskyy interview with the message ‘Very good!!!’. Within the MAGA movement, however, it was met with surprise and suspicion from commentators who had previously regarded her as one of its strongest anti-Ukraine voices.
